Ben celebrated as one of the greatest Nigerian artist of the 20th century, and one of the first artists from Africa to enjoy international success.
His sculpture Atlas, with its beautiful textural finish, undoubtedly dates to this period and was most likely a private commission. The muscular kneeling figure of Atlas, condemned to hold up the celestial heavens or sky for eternity, is a common trope in art history.
